McTimoney chiropractic provides a holistic approach to caring for canines. I treat the whole body but pay particular attention to the spine and pelvis. I use a very light and gentle technique which can be beneficial to dogs that are a little wary or nervous of new things.
Chiropractic is able to address multiple different health and performance issues which may be chronic or acute. McTimoney chiropractic focuses on ensuring that the nervous system is functioning at its optimum by removing misalignments found within the spine and pelvis. A misalignment is when a joint has become restricted in its motion and is unable to function properly. Misalignments can interfere with the signals between the brain and the nervous system and by removing these, the signals become clearer. This enables the dog to function and perform at there best.
Innate healing plays a huge role in your dogs healing process which is your dogs ability to heal itself. We all possess innate healing and chiropractic is able to initiate this to help with aches and pains.
Chiropractors also assess for any asymmetry, muscle tension and abnormalities in the dogs gait or biomechanics which are all very common. These issues can be caused by a variety of different issues such as chronic or acute issues, trauma, repetitive actions, misalignments or pain.
Chiropractic can be used on all animals with a spine! Not just canines. Cats, guinea-pigs, rabbits and many more, all benefit from chiropractic care.

I will ask a series of questions to gain more information about your dogs medical history, current issue and what your dogs day-to-day routine is. This enables me to tailor your dogs treatment and allows me to get a better understanding of their biomechanics. Understanding more about your dog helps me to understand what it is you want your dog to achieve. That could be improved performance or to just feel more comfortable.
It is important to observe your dogs conformation and movement before treatment. It allows me to identify areas of asymmetry, restriction in range of motion, pain and muscle tension. Understanding your dogs biomechanics means that I am able to target specific problematic areas during the course of the treatment.
Through assessing yours dogs gait and stance, I am able to identify undiagnosed lameness or possible neurological conditions which would need to be referred back to a vet, if the vet is not aware of this issue. I will always make sure to refer your dog if I suspect that there is anything that may not be musculoskeletal related. Ensuring that your dog gets the best care possible it my ultimate goal.
After a thorough examination, I will proceed with the chiropractic treatment, providing that your dog has no contraindications to receiving chiropractic care, veterinary consent has been given and that the owner/ agent is happy for me to continue. After treatment has been given, I will give aftercare advice which may include exercises that you can do in-between the sessions.
I will always make sure to include other professions, such as massage therapists or physiotherapists in your dogs care, if it is necessary.
All animal chiropractors must work under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and the Exemptions Order 2015. To abide by this, the owner must consult their veterinary surgeon and gain consent before your dog can receive chiropractic care. If your dog is receiving chiropractic care as a general 'MOT'/ maintenance then veterinary consent is not needed. It is illegal to treat an animal without veterinary consent and would void any insurance policies in place. Once consent has been given, your dog can begin their chiropractic treatment and would only need veterinary consent again if a new issue arises that the vet is not aware of.
