Equine Chiropractic

How McTimoney Chiropractic Can Benefit Your Horse

Equine chiropractic is able to address multiple different health and performance issues by removing misalignments and regaining a fully functioning nervous system. A misalignment is when a joint has become restricted in its motion and is unable to function properly. This can lead to interferences with the signal between the brain and the nervous system. By removing these misalignments it enables the horse to function and perform at there best.

Chiropractors also assess for any asymmetry, muscle tension and abnormalities in the horses gait or biomechanics which are all very common. These issues can be caused by a variety of different issues such as chronic or acute issues, trauma, repetitive actions or pain.

For a horse to function well it is essential that they have a healthy spine and a fully functioning nervous system.

What Happens At Your Horses Initial Consultation

History Taking

Before assessing your horse, I will ask a series of questions to gain more information about your horses medical history, current issue and what your horses day-to-day routine is. This enables me to tailor your horses treatment and allows me to get a better understanding of your horses biomechanics.

Assessment

Looking at your horses conformation and movement is key to identifying areas of asymmetry, restriction in range of motion, pain and muscle tension. Understanding your horses biomechanics means that I am able to target specific problematic areas during the course of the treatment.

It also allows me to identify any undiagnosed lameness or possible neurological conditions which would need to be referred back to a vet, if the vet is not already aware of this issue.

Treatment

After a thorough examination, I will proceed with the chiropractic treatment, providing that your horse has no contraindications to receiving chiropractic care, veterinary consent has been given and that the owner/ agent is happy for me to continue. The treatment can take between 30-45 minutes. After treatment has been given, I will give aftercare advice which may include exercises that you can do in-between the sessions.

I will always make sure to include other professions, such as farriers or saddlers in your horses care, if it is necessary.

Treating large groups of horses, such as race yards and studs.

Due to large quantities of horses needing chiropractic treatment in one day, the treatment process will vary slightly to accommodate. However, veterinary consent will always be required.

*IMPORTANT*

All animal chiropractors must work under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and the Exemptions Order 2015. To abide by this, the owner must consult their veterinary surgeon and gain consent before your horse can receive chiropractic care. If your horse is receiving chiropractic care as a general 'MOT'/ maintenance then veterinary consent is not needed. It is illegal to treat an animal without veterinary consent and would void any insurance policies in place. Once consent has been given, your horse can begin their chiropractic treatment and would only need veterinary consent again if a new issue arises that the vet is not aware of.

If you have any queries or issues, please do not hesitate to contact me.
